I gruvedriftskommunen Sokndal, plassert ved kysten helt sør i Rogaland, ligger Velferden – Sokndals Scene for Samtidskunst. Gruvedrift har preget området i over 150 år og daglige sprengninger i den forbindelse gjør at landskapet stadig er i forandring. Nye daler oppstår og sanddyner og hauger av knust fjell fyller dalene igjen. En stor vindmøllepark gjør seg også bemerket med over 50 turbiner plassert på fjelltoppene i området.
Titanias velferdsbygning fra 1953, ble tegnet av arkitektene Thorvald og Henning Astrup (Hydro arkitektene), og satt opp for å bedre gruvearbeidernes velferdssituasjon. Bygget inneholdt garderober, kantine, vaskeri, helsesøster, festsal og solarium. Det ble også brukt til alle mulige sosiale fritidsaktiviteter som søndagsskole, skyteklubb, brylluper og kurs.
I dag drives Velferden av billedkunstnerne Maiken Stene og Hans Edward Hammonds. Foreningen leier bygningen av Egeland Sveis og mottar blant annet driftsstøtte fra Sokndal kommune, Basisfinansiering for det frie kunstfeltet fra Rogaland fylkeskommune og Arrangørstøtte fra Kulturrådet. Velferden tilbyr residency-opphold for kunstnere på tvers av sjangre og arrangerer seminarer, større kuraterte sommerprosjekter og konserter. Samtidskunsten inngår i et bredt tverrfaglig perspektiv som forholder seg til natur, miljø, kulturhistorie og stedsbevissthet. Hvert år fokuserer de på et tema – i 2020/21 er temaet Geologi/Geografi; hva er stedet og hvordan navigerer vi det, og i 2022 vil tema være samfunn/identitet; hvem er vi og hvordan former stedet oss. Tema for de årlige seminarene avgjøres ut ifra hva som kommer frem av den kunstneriske aktiviteten resten av året, blant annet gjennom de større kuraterte sommerprosjektene – der alle deltakerne jobber intenst sammen i løpet av noen uker for så å vise fram sin produksjon på den årlige Åpne Dagen!
Stedets lokalhistorie og samfunn er av stor betydning for Velferdens program. En del av formålet til Velferden er å skape bevissthet omkring fortiden, nåtiden og framtiden til stedet. Samtidig er det et mål å skape engasjement og samhold lokalt.

In the mining municipality Sokndal, located on the southern coast of Rogaland, is Velferden – Sokndals Scene for Samtidskunst. Mining has characterized the area for over 150 years and ongoing daily blasting continually and dramatically shapes the landscape.
New valleys emerge and dunes of crushed rock fill the scars in the landscape in a continual cycle. A large wind farm with over fifty turbines located on overlooking mountain tops further presides over the area.
Titania’s welfare building was established in 1953 to improve the miners’ welfare situation, and was designed by architects Thorvald and Henning Astrup (the Hydro architects).
The original building contained changing rooms, a cafeteria, laundry facilities, a nurse station, banquet hall,and solarium. It was also used for a variety of social leisure activities such as Sunday school, a shooting club, weddings and educational courses.
Today, Velferden is run by visual artists Maiken Stene and Hans Edward Hammonds. The association rents the building from Egeland Sveis and receives, among other things, operational support from Sokndal municipality, basic financing for artistic activities from Rogaland county municipality and organizational support from the Cultural Council. Velferden offers residencies for artists across genres and arranges seminars, curated summer projects and concerts.
At Velferden, contemporary art is part of a broad interdisciplinary perspective that relates to nature, the environment, cultural history and the awareness of place. Every year they focus on one theme – in 2020/21 the theme is Geology / Geography; what is place and how do we navigate it, and the theme planned for 2022 is society / identity; who we are and how place shapes us. The theme for the annual seminars is decided based on the concepts that emerge through the artistic activity during the rest of the year. Particularly influential are curated summer projects in which all participants work intensively together within a few weeks and then show their results at the annual Open Day!
The local history and community of the place are of great importance for the programming of Velferden. Part of the purpose of the organization is to create awareness about the past, present and future of the place. At the same time, it is a goal to create local unity and a commitment to the place.
