Working mainly with video, media- and visual artist Camilla Edström Ödemark takes an interest in the construction of group identities and their dynamic relation to the Self. Her work often adress the representation of norms in popular culture and myth as a way of maintaining Western advantage in a globalized world.
During her stay at AIR Sandnes, Edström Ödemark has initiated a project, focusing on the myth of Narcissus. In her work, Narcissus, the young hunter of ancient Greek mythology who fell in love with his own reflection, comes to represent Western society. Caught up in the filter bubbles of social media, the self-admiring hunt for more likes and the rise of far-right extremism and xenophobia, Edström Ödemark describes Western discourse as a system of codes, mirroring eurocentrism and colonial norms. In this system, identity becomes a self-reflective project, a modern Narcissus. The exhibition Anamorphosis2.0 is a work-in-progress presenting Edström Ödemark’s progress at AIR Sandnes.
