About

Contemporary Art Stavanger consists of an online art journal as well as a physical residency program for critics, writers and researchers. Through our work, we aim to contribute meaningful conversation relevant to the Stavanger region’s art scene, while at the same time connecting the content to a larger national and international discourse – we therefore publish in both Norwegian and English. In addition to reviews, essays, and interviews, we explore the expansive possibilities of CAS’ online platform and investigate different ways of working with writers, residencies, and the format of art writing and criticism. We at CAS are dedicated to presenting a wide range of perspectives, voices, and subject matter. Read more

Symbiotic Scenes

September 16, 2021 - September 18, 2021 Exhibition

About

Symbiotic Scenes is a public scenographic work appearing on the vacant plot in front of Scene 1. It’s the first work of three, constituting the artistic research project Scenography as Symbiosis developed by Jakob Oredsson, artist, architect, scenographer and current research fellow at Norwegian Theatre Academy (HiØ). Scenography is imagined as symbiosis with reference to the philosophical school Object-Oriented Ontology as influenced by Lynn Margulis theories on symbiosis.

This scenography is a video work mediated through a led screen held by scaffolding. The work is realized through scenes of symbiosis between objects, which are part of the public milieu. Through the principles of copying, exposing, inversing, with relation to architecture and landscape, mundane and spectacular, the work is manifested, as new scenographic objects. It exists as foreground with the fjord landscape as background, while continuously and contradictory shimmeringly shifting between these states through everchanging exposure of existing objects. The work engages with past and future developments, cultural and political, of the public sphere, activating dialogues and encounters between human and non-human participants.

Symbiotic Scenes seeks solidarity with the endless variety of spatiotemporal scales coexisting within and forming the context. As scenography, it endeavors to exist through relation with and description of the environment, tuning with it, queering binaries such as active-passive, time-space, encouraging acceptance of difference and appreciation of strangeness.
