About

Contemporary Art Stavanger consists of an online art journal as well as a physical residency program for critics, writers and researchers. Through our work, we aim to contribute meaningful conversation relevant to the Stavanger region’s art scene, while at the same time connecting the content to a larger national and international discourse – we therefore publish in both Norwegian and English. In addition to reviews, essays, and interviews, we explore the expansive possibilities of CAS’ online platform and investigate different ways of working with writers, residencies, and the format of art writing and criticism. We at CAS are dedicated to presenting a wide range of perspectives, voices, and subject matter. Read more

Shahrzad Malekian / Here for You

February 17 @11:00 - February 19 @13:00 CET Performance

About

Performancen undersøker mulighetene for samhold i offentlige rom.

Here for You / Performance by Shahrzad Malekian

In the brand-new performance ‘Here for You’, the artist Shahrzad Malekian takes parts of her exhibition ‘Rebellious Forms’ at Stavanger Art Museum into the city. Over the course of three days, you can meet Malekian, her sculptures and a group of dancers in the streets around the square Arneageren and at Sølvberget Library and Culture House.

The work will be performed:
Friday 17 February 11 am – 12 pm
Saturday 18 February 11 am – 12 pm
Sunday 19 February 12 pm – 1 pm

‘Here for you’ is an artistic exploration of freedom and play in urban space. The performance examines the possibilities for unity in public spaces. Can sharing experiences with strangers make us look at our common public space with a new eye?

The public is invited to follow the performance, which will begin outside and continue inside Sølvberget Library and Culture House. A group of performers will move through the city and use the soft sculptures in a series of physical interventions. The sculptures have geometric patterns in black and white and are made like scaffolding pads or safety cushions. The inspiration for the sculptures comes from a method of camouflaging war ships during World War I, known as dazzle camouflage.

The aim of the work is to draw attention to the invisible or overlooked through playful interventions in the urban space. For the artist, this is an act of resistance, which redistributes the relationship between bodies, architecture, and other elements in the city. By playing with visibility and invisibility, exposure and disappearance, the performers’ bodies are connected to the body of the city.

The work is created and performed together with Hanne Kristine Jensen, Maja Freiberg, Ingvild Maria Thingnes.
The session ends with the audience being invited to try out the sculptures themselves, under the guidance of the artist.

Shahrzad Malekian (b. 1983 in Iran, lives and works in Oslo) makes artworks that use the human body as a starting point. Her work takes the form of performance, video, and sculpture –often in combination. For Malekian the body is both a medium and a tool to explore social, cultural, and political attitudes, norms, and structures. She uses strategies such as participation and collaboration to explore performativity and interaction, at art institutions and in the public sphere.

The performance ‘Here for You’ is commissioned by Stavanger Art Museum in connection with the exhibition Shahrzad Malekian – Rebellious Forms. It will create a bridge between the interactive exhibition and the city of Stavanger and meet the audiences where they are.

The exhibition is a part of an exhibition series aimed especially at children and young people at Stavanger Art Museum. Under the umbrella NONA we have invited contemporary artists to exhibit works that explores the nature of participation, collaboration, and performativity in art.

The performance is organised in collaboration with Sølvberget Library and Culture House and is generously supported by the City of Stavanger.
