Maria Nepomuceno – Afetosyntesis

March 14, 2017 @18:00 CET Exhibition

Welcome to opening of the exhibition Friday 17 March at 6 pm. Performance: Mamaprana

Brazilian artist Maria Nepomuceno (b.1976) creates sculptures with rope that is wrapped and sewn into organic cylindrical forms. The exhibition title combines the Portuguese words afeto (devotion or affection) and synthesis, meaning the same as it does in English. The colours, forms, sounds and textures of these works invite you to have sensory experiences.

Part of the exhibition is the installation Refùgio. This is a room where you can contemplate and participate. Feel free to lay down in the stretched-out ‘beds’ and play with the branches hanging from the ceiling by pulling the yellow ropes. The title suggests shelter or refuge. In a world where people are fleeing war or poverty, the symbolism of this work gains added relevance.

In addition to the large installation, the exhibition presents sculptural works created between 2007 and 2017. One of these, The Force, is in the park outside the museum.

The exhibition is curated by Hanne Beate Ueland and Vibece Salthe, in collaboration with museum educator Helga Nyman.
