About

Contemporary Art Stavanger consists of an online art journal as well as a physical residency program for critics, writers and researchers. Through our work, we aim to contribute meaningful conversation relevant to the Stavanger region’s art scene, while at the same time connecting the content to a larger national and international discourse – we therefore publish in both Norwegian and English. In addition to reviews, essays, and interviews, we explore the expansive possibilities of CAS’ online platform and investigate different ways of working with writers, residencies, and the format of art writing and criticism. We at CAS are dedicated to presenting a wide range of perspectives, voices, and subject matter. Read more

Katy Grannan – The Nine at Sølvberget

September 17, 2016 @16:00 - 17:00 CEST Film Screening

About

Kunsthall Stavanger invites you to a viewing of the American photographer Katy Grannan’s documentary The Nine.

The screening is arranged in collaboration with Kapittel Literature Festival at the cinema in Sølvberget and the artist will be present.

—

The Nine is the nickname of a strip of road in Modesto California known to be the last outpost of heavy drug addiction, prostitution, and homelessness. Through a convincing visual expression and an unfiltered artistic approach to documentary filmmaking, Grannan poignantly captures everyday moments of so-called non-places, through the life of the protagonist Kiki.

The town of Modesto is located in the Central Valley of California; the same area where the photographer Dorothea Lange documented the Great Depression in the 1930s. As a documentary photographer, Katy Grannan has mastered the seamless transition from photography to film, while still adding a fresh perspective. The moving images presented in The Nine create their own unique poetry.

Katy Grannan (b. 1969) is active as a photographer and filmmaker, living and working in California. In 2005, Grannan published the photobook Model American with the publishing house Aperture and her works are in the collections of major art institutions such as the Whitney Museum of American Art and the Museum of Modern Art, New York. Katy Grannan’s oeuvre is characterized by documentary portrait photography and the ability to depict subjects with a deeply humanist approach.
