About

Contemporary Art Stavanger consists of an online art journal as well as a physical residency program for critics, writers and researchers. Through our work, we aim to contribute meaningful conversation relevant to the Stavanger region’s art scene, while at the same time connecting the content to a larger national and international discourse – we therefore publish in both Norwegian and English. In addition to reviews, essays, and interviews, we explore the expansive possibilities of CAS’ online platform and investigate different ways of working with writers, residencies, and the format of art writing and criticism. We at CAS are dedicated to presenting a wide range of perspectives, voices, and subject matter. Read more

Exhibition “Where Shadow Chases Light”, Vanessa Rosalia Larsen

February 20, 2020 @18:00 - March 1, 2020 @18:00 CET Exhibition

About

Exhibition “Where Shadow Chases Light”, Vanessa Rosalia Larsen
20.02.20 – 01.03.20

“Where Shadow Chases Light” explores interaction as integral to the concept of reflection. For reflections to occur an interaction must take place. The concept of reflection is explored through medium, process and subject-matter. Between pencil and paint, drawing and screen printing, light and shadow, the exhibition seeks to visually and materially reflect on the role of interaction. Light and shadow have been used to inspire the patterns that have taken form in the work.

Vanessa Rosalia Larsen’s drawing practice rests on a foundation of inquiry and discovery. She follows a systematic process of working, experimenting with factors such as grid pattern, graphite pencils, shading technique and space. Although the process is controlled, the patterns take on a form of their own. Changing one factor at a time results in infinite visual possibilities. She is fascinated by the universal human impulse to seek order and rhythm.

Born in 1990 in Bergen, Vanessa Rosalia Larsen studied at Glasgow School of Art where she received her BFA in Painting and Printmaking in 2013 and her masters in Curatorial Practice in 2016. Her work has been exhibited throughout the world including in Oslo, London, Berlin, Istanbul and New York. Her drawing ‘Directional Shading’ is included in the public collection at Glasgow School of Art Archives & Collections. In January Larsen received the cultural grant from Gjesdal municipality. She currently lives and works in Ålgård.
