About

Contemporary Art Stavanger consists of an online art journal as well as a physical residency program for critics, writers and researchers. Through our work, we aim to contribute meaningful conversation relevant to the Stavanger region’s art scene, while at the same time connecting the content to a larger national and international discourse – we therefore publish in both Norwegian and English. In addition to reviews, essays, and interviews, we explore the expansive possibilities of CAS’ online platform and investigate different ways of working with writers, residencies, and the format of art writing and criticism. We at CAS are dedicated to presenting a wide range of perspectives, voices, and subject matter. Read more

DEADLINE: 2017 CAS Residency

May 15, 2017 Deadline

About

Autumn 2017 | Application deadline May 15, 2017 | 1 research and critical writing residency

National and international writers, curators, and artistic researchers are eligible to apply. Applications are open to individuals interested in pursuing research, curatorial and critical writing opportunities related to the region of Stavanger, Norway.

The Residency in Art Writing is a self-driven program organized by Contemporary Art Stavanger (CAS), and offers individuals a unique opportunity to delve into independent research, writing, and criticism based around Stavanger and the surrounding region. Research can be broadly focused on surveying the regional art scene, or targeted towards a specific area of interest. It is the goal of the residency to create and strengthen networks between national/international writers and thinkers and local practitioners while advancing regional criticism and research.

We welcome applications from curators, writers, and artistic researchers who are interested in learning about the cultural scene in the Stavanger region and with capacity for in-depth research and writing. During the residency, curators and writers will be expected to conduct studio, gallery, and institutional visits organized in collaboration with CAS, and will have the possibility of holding workshops and/or public presentations for the local community. There is a possibility for collaboration with rural regional residencies as well during the time of stay.

Curators and writers are free from specific requirements during the residency period, however the resident will be asked to submit at least two articles for publication on CAS in the months following the residency. Articles may include essays, transcribed lectures, interviews, reviews, research findings, and/or other texts relating to the resident’s activities in Stavanger.

English or Norwegian speaking and writing skills are required.

The invited resident will receive:

Up to two weeks long residency in September/October of 2017 – minimum one week
Residency grant NOK 10.000
Travel costs not exceeding NOK 5.000
Free accommodation
Support in accessing artist studios, galleries and institutions
Public lecture or presentation opportunities
Publication on CAS

Application must include:

CV including contact information and relevant links
Two work/writing samples
Motivation Letter, maximum 1 page, including specific interest in the Stavanger region and hopes for the residency period
Available dates in September / October
All documents should be in English or Norwegian, and submitted in PDF or Microsoft Word format.

Please submit only electronic copies of the above in ONE email to: info@contemporaryartstavanger.no.
Application deadline: May 15, 2017

All applicants will be notified of the decision in June.
