About

Contemporary Art Stavanger consists of an online art journal as well as a physical residency program for critics, writers and researchers. Through our work, we aim to contribute meaningful conversation relevant to the Stavanger region’s art scene, while at the same time connecting the content to a larger national and international discourse – we therefore publish in both Norwegian and English. In addition to reviews, essays, and interviews, we explore the expansive possibilities of CAS’ online platform and investigate different ways of working with writers, residencies, and the format of art writing and criticism. We at CAS are dedicated to presenting a wide range of perspectives, voices, and subject matter. Read more

NO (EN below)

Solo project performed by Caroline Eckly.
Created by Marcelo Evelin and Caroline Eckly.
“Your continent is black. Black is dangerous. In the dark you can’t see, you are afraid. Don’t move because you risk falling. Above all, don’t go to the forest. And the horror of the dark, we internalised it. They didn’t have eyes for themselves. They did not go to explore their house. Their sex still scares them now. Their body was colonised and they did not dare to come. The woman is afraid and disgusted with the woman … We got trapped between two horrifying myths: between the Medusa and the abyss. Half of the world would burst out laughing if this did not continue.”

-Hélène Cixous, The laugh of the Medusa

In the beginning, there was the Medusa, a woman turned into a monster by punishment for having been raped and who can kill with her eyes.

We talked about the gaze, the eyes like a mirror which reflect the violence of the world or accept the gaze of the other, absorb it.

We evoked the image of the oracle, who transmits, who invokes, who speaks instead of a God or words, who opens doors that were closed, who possess an ancient occult power.

We want to give particular attention to the dancer’s body, use it as raw material, use the physicality as medium, at the core of the narrative, bearer of a multi-imaginary.

We suggest the laugh as a cry, as a jolt, as bursts between enchantment and rage.

With a fascination for certain practices and rituals where dance leads to a subconscious state, we offer a dive into the inside, call the imagination, penetrate the black continent.

We invite the public to a ceremony, in a timeless space, where they can witness a body in transformation.
